5. Conducted POGIL Workshop at EnhanceEdu on 8th August, 2011
Clif Kussmaul, associate Professor,Department of Computer Science, Muhlenberg, conducted a workshop on POGIL (Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning) on August 8th,2011 at EnhanceEdu. POGIL is a student- centered instructional approach that simultaneously develops discipline, content mastery and key process skills such as critical thinking, effective communication and teamwork. In this student centered strategy, the EnhanceEdu team worked in small groups with individual roles. Students were then given fully designed materials that guided them to construct new learning. Cliff pointed out that POGIL was based on research that indicated that teaching by telling does not work for most students, and that students are likely to be more successful when they are part of an interactive community. The project is funded by National Science Foundation. In addition to helping students to learn by doing, POGIL also would help to develop process skills such as critical thinking, problem solving and communication through collaboration and reflection, making students more competitive in a global market. Ms Adilakshmi, Head of Computer Science Department from Vasavi Engineering College attended the workshop. She was keen on implementing POGIL at her institution with smaller numbers in a class. Cliff has a PhD in Computer Science from the University of California, Davis , USA; a MA in Electro-acoustic Music from Dartmouth College, USA; and a BS in Engineering and BA in Music from Swarthmore College, USA. His professional interests include active learning, free and open source software, software engineering, and applications of computing in other disciplines.

He can be reached at clif@kussmaul.org.

EnhanceEdu organized its 5th Principals meeting on 16th March 2011 at IIIT-Hyderabad. The meeting started at 9'o clock with registrations and interaction with the participants. Welcome note was given by Ms. Sandhya Kode (Director, EnhanceEdu, IIIT-H). She spoke about the employability skills and gap between colleges and industry, and also ways to bridge this gap. She stressed on need of robust attitude among students to implement their learning’s to real life problems. She also told about learning by doing methodology implemented in Certificate in Information Technology (CIT) program, which gives students not only better understanding of subjects to excel in academics but also the confidence to face industry requirements. Dr. D. N Reddy (VC, JNTU-H) graced the principals meeting as the chief guest. He talked on Digital learning technologies and bridging the gap. He talked about the growing number of students and the growing disinterest in profession of teaching due to which it's tough to find good lecturers. He conveyed his idea about futuristic goals of education, where the universities will go virtual. Dr. Rajeev Sangal (Director, IIIT-H) spoke about Human values and its role in ones life. He explained in detail about basic needs why human values should be a part of curriculum. In his words, a teacher's responsibility is not only to endow the student with technical knowledge but also with human values which has a greater significance in every aspect of life and which also to a certain extent influences the professional life of a student.

Prof. Venkatesh choppella, Associate professor at IIIT - Hyderabad, talked about FOSS (Free and Open Source Software), FOSS community, and also gave a critical comparison between Proprietary software and FOSS. Mr. Aditya Margam, our industry support, in his talk, focused upon communication skills and how to get ones point across. He highlighted that it is not just a quality of speaking polished and fluent English that can be termed as good communication skills but the polite yet firm way of expressing oneself. He backed up his statement by few experiences he had during his long career in industry as a recruiter. Dr. Uma Garimella, consultant with EnhanceEdu and founder of Inspiring Teachers spoke about the Art of mentoring which is one of the golden pillars on which CIT program stands. Dr. Vishwanath, also a faculty of IIIT-H brought up an interesting point that we train students for industry, but how do they cope up in unfortunate situations like recession etc. He expressed his concern for also preparing students to face such situations in their career.

10. Jeevan Vidya Shivir was offered in teacher training program

The objective of the workshop is to draw attention to the self in the human being, what is within us innate and intact, need for human relationships, inherent desire to seek knowledge, and the joy that we naturally derive from these. Thus, it brings about a dialogue between what we are and what we seek to be. It does not posit happiness in an after-world, but here and now. It is rational, secular, universal and encompassing all dimensions

25 trainees attended the 1 week full-time Jeevan Vidya Shivir on human values.

4. Conducted assessment training on 21 st November, 2009

In our endeavor to enhance the skills of faculty members of engineering colleges, we conducted a one day workshop on assessment training at IIIT-H. In this workshop, training is on designing scoring tools for assessments and tasks. This workshop was conducted as part of the process for completion of the formal training process.

In this workshop, the speaker give an exposure of different educational taxonomies like Bloom’s and Fink’s and its importance in the current education system. Knowing the taxonomies is helpful in developing a course and in assessing students’ knowledge.

Bloom's Taxonomy refers to a classification of the different objectives that educators set for students (learning objectives). Bloom's Taxonomy divides educational objectives into three domains: Affective, Psychomotor, and Cognitive. Within the taxonomy learning at the higher levels is dependent on having attained prerequisite knowledge and skills at lower levels.

In this talk the speaker mainly focuses on cognitive domain, skills in the cognitive domain revolve around knowledge, comprehension, and critical thinking of a particular topic. Traditional education tends to emphasize the skills in this domain, particularly the lower-order objectives. There are six levels in the taxonomy, moving through the lowest order processes to the highest as show in the figure.

In Bloom’s taxonomy, Bloom did not discuss about human dimension, learning how to learn and caring areas which Fink’s mentioned. Fink also mentions learning process is not hierarchal, but it is continuous process.

Learning Styles:

A Learning style is the way in which each learner begins to concentrate on, process and retain new and difficult information. In this workshop the speaker discussed about different approaches of learning such as:

  • Visual
  • Auditory
  • Read / Write
  • Kinesthetic
Rubrics:

In the assessment training, we discussed about rubrics and advantages of rubrics over a single numerical score. He also mentioned that assessments should be conducted in such a way that it should be aligned to learning objectives. Good grades are more likely to translate into Good learning.

5. Talk by Mr. Vijay Rangineni on Assessment Training workshop on 31st October, 2009
.

Mr. Vijay Rangineni (CEO of Mahindra Satyam BPO) was invited to have a talk with our mentors on the assessment training workshop conducted on 31st October 2009. He had discussed the demographics of India, where 35.3% of the people are aged between 0 and 14 and 56.9% are aged between 15 and 59, it is upon this group that the development of the country depends. We have 500+ universities and 25000+ colleges but still a gap persists between industry needs and students' abilities.

Mr.Rangineni pointed out some of the shortcomings of our education system where -

  • There is a greater focus on theory/fundamentals rather than on application
  • There is a lack of constant updation of syllabus
  • There is a non-existent / inadequate interaction with corporate
  • There is a low weightage given to corporate internships and industry stints

The need for well-rounded skill sets to be developed by students to bridge the gap between industry needs and their level of knowledge was discussed.

  • Increased impetus on corporate internship
  • Writing technical papers
  • Business writings
  • Soft skills training(negotiation skills, interpersonal skills, communication skills..etc) which are very important to sustain in corporate
  • Cross culture training
  • Student should focus on applying theories/fundamentals in building applications rather than just knowing it
6. Talk by Mr. Aditya Margam on 27th October, 2009
